On December 13 of 2019 a ceremony was held to mark the completion of a 164.38-hectare expansion project at the Pingtung Agricultural Biotechnology Park.
6. Using Smart Technology to Develop Innovative Agriculture
(1) Promoting agricultural technology industrial clusters
The Pingtung Agricultural Biotechnology Park (PABP) offers an outstanding investment environment, as well as provides import and export customs clearance, inspection and quarantine, warehousing, and transport services by bringing together the Kaohsiung Customs office of the Customs Administration of the Ministry of Finance, the COA’s Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine, the COA’s Animal Health Research Institute, and logistic firms, all of which have offices within the PABP itself. The PABP has become
an agricultural technology industrial cluster that combines research and development with production and marketing. As of the end of 2019, 104 firms had moved into the PABP, bringing investment of NT$10.356 billion and creating over 2,500 jobs.
Given that 90% of the land for factory construction at the PABP had already been leased, and to coordinate with a new wave of policy-driven investment in factory establishment, in 2019 the PABP completed a 164.38-hectare expansion project. The Park also upgraded its software and hardware services capabilities, continuing to attract high-value- added firms, such as those practicing smart, energy-saving, and/or circular agriculture, to move in. The PABP has the beneficial effects of encouraging industrialization of agricultural technology in Taiwan and establishing a foundation for bringing and keeping Taiwan up to international standards.
The Taiwan Orchid Plantation (TOP) occupies 175 hectares of land, with greenhouse construction over 95 hectares. As of the end of 2019, 83 businesses had moved into the TOP and built greenhouses, bringing cumulative investment of NT$18.343 billion. Of these, 82 businesses were operating, with total revenues for the year of NT$2.008 billion.
