Martin's Easy Way to Make a Wildflower Meadow

Martin Bailey

Award Winning Show Garden by Claudia de Yong

Supplier to the winning show garden designed by
Claudia de Yong at Gardeners' World Live, NEC 2017

If you would love a traditional wildflower meadow in your garden, but are worried about the uncertainty of seeding (it is often a major disappointment, even if you do everything 'right'), then wildflower meadow turf is what you need.

Yes, it's a lot more expensive initially, but you get a fantastic wildflower meadow THIS YEAR, instead of waiting 3-4 years for a disappointing result, and in the long run it actually works out cheaper as you don't have to deal with the weeds.

This is why the people who make the show gardens at RHS Chelsea, Gardeners' World Live, etc. buy this stuff from us - it is an easy way to get a great result, quickly. It was also used in the London Olympics in 2012!

If you're still not convinced, feel free to order some wildflower meadow seed mix, and I really hope it works for you, but if your ground is anything other than perfect for seeding, I would urge you to consider this fantastic wildflower turf.

It's what we used for our wildflower meadows.

Best Regards, Martin.

If you've been watching TV nature and gardening programmes lately, you'll have seen a lot of interest in wildflower meadows. There are many advantages to wildflower meadows: they cover the ground in a beautiful mix of wildflowers and grasses; they provide a banquet of nectar and pollen for bees and butterflies, and many other insects; and they just make you feel good while you're looking at them.

If you saw Sarah Raven's series Bees, Butterflies and Blooms on BBC 2, you'll have seen how wonderful these mini habitats can be, and how much pleasure you and your friends can get from them.

We can't think of an easier way to convert an area of your garden into a wildflower meadow! Once you've cleared the ground you just need to roll out the turf, water it from time to time, then sit back and watch it grow! You can even use it on a green roof for a really dramatic effect.

The native flower seeds mixed into the turf will give you wildflowers from early spring right through to autumn which will provide a fantastic habitat for birds, butterflies and other insects. Whilst you're waiting for your turf to bloom you can easily add a few plug plants to it or even plant bulbs through it.

And it doesn't matter how large or small an area you want to convert... our Wildflower Turf is supplied in easy to use rolls. So, you can order just as much as you need, from 5 sq m to a full truck load, or even more!

Please contact us for details of our special roofing turf & roofing turf with sedum added.

Our standard wildflower meadow turf is a 75% mix of wildflower and 25% grass seed so that you get a high proportion of flowers. All seeds used are, of course, from native stock (except where specified). The grasses used in the turf form a dense sward which acts as a weed blanket, giving the wildflower plants a head start against outside competition, and have been chosen to complement rather than overwhelm the flowers.

Because Wildflower Turf is grown on a plastic base all the root development is contained within the turf itself, creating a good mat of roots. This gives it great strength which in turn makes it easy to handle and lay. And because it hasn't been cut from topsoil it hasn't lost its roots, so it establishes itself really quickly in your garden (occasionally, our soil-less turf may be unavailable, in which case we will supply an alternative).

Maintenance, apart from watering it during establishment, is minimal... no weeding or fertilising should be necessary, just an annual cutting in autumn.

Wildflower turf can be grown using specific species to suit your requirements, so please contact us with your requirements.

Note that there may be a surcharge for delivery to northern Scotland. We can't supply to Northern Ireland.
